Warning Signs

What Gutter Problems Do You Have?

Most gutter trouble shows up in a hard rain, which is the worst time to find it. These are the signs we look for, from the roof edge down to where the water lands.

  • Water spilling over the front edge in a heavy rain
  • Runs sagging or pulling away from the house
  • Drips at the seams, corners and end caps
  • Downspouts emptying right beside the foundation
  • Stains, peeling paint or soft spots on the fascia board
  • Dents in the gutters and downspouts after hail
  • Shingle granules collecting in the gutter
  • Standing water, leaves or seedlings in the gutter

Our Gutter Services

Installation, repair and cleaning, from the same crew that works on your roof.

  • Gutter Installation

New gutters and downspouts, sized for Central Texas downpours rather than an average rain, installed with a new roof or on their own.

If the roof is being replaced anyway, that is a sensible time to replace tired gutters, and one crew handles both jobs.

  • Gutter Repair

Sagging runs, leaking seams and corners, loose hangers, failed end caps, and gutters and downspouts damaged in a storm.

When the fascia board behind a gutter has rotted, that is roof work too: fascia and soffit repair is part of our roof repair service.

  • Gutter Cleaning

We clear the gutters and downspouts so water keeps moving away from the roof edge and the foundation.

It is also a look at what is in them. Shingle granules piling up in a gutter are an early sign that a roof is wearing out.

Local Conditions

Gutters for San Antonio Homes

A gutter here has a specific job. The rain comes hard, the trees drop their leaves in spring, and in parts of the area the soil moves with every wet and dry spell.

We do gutter work across San Antonio, Stone Oak, Bulverde, Boerne, Helotes, Fair Oaks Ranch, Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Shavano Park, Live Oak, Universal City and Cibolo. See every town we serve.

It rains hard here

NOAA's rainfall atlas puts an hour with about 2 inches of rain at roughly once every two years in North San Antonio, and the once-a-decade storm at almost 3 inches in an hour. On a roof covering 2,000 square feet, that every-other-year hour sends about 2,400 gallons of water to the gutters. A gutter has to be sized for that rain, not for an average one.

The leaves come down in spring

Live oaks are not truly evergreen. According to Texas A&M's Plant Clinic, they shed last year's leaves in spring, usually from March into early May, as the new growth comes in. Pecans and cedar elms shed in the fall, so a yard with both may need its gutters cleaned twice a year.

Water belongs well away from the slab

Parts of the San Antonio area sit on clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks as it dries, and a downspout that empties against the foundation keeps one side of that soil wetter than the rest. Where soils are expansive, the International Residential Code (section R801.3) calls for roof water to be discharged at least 5 feet from the foundation. Where each downspout lets out is part of every free inspection.

Hail dents metal

Hail that damages a roof often dents the gutters and downspouts too. NOAA's storm records show a storm on April 12, 2016 that produced 4.5 inch hail in northwestern San Antonio, and one on May 3, 2021 with hail up to 5.5 inches on the east side of Bexar County. After a storm we document damage to the gutters along with the roof, as part of our hail and storm damage repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most about gutters.

Do you install gutters without replacing the roof?

Yes. We install gutters and downspouts along with a new roof or on their own.

Is the gutter inspection free?

Yes. Our free roof inspection covers the gutters, the downspouts and where the water drains, and you get photos and a written report. There is no obligation.

Can you fix gutters that are pulling away from the house?

In most cases, yes. A gutter pulls away when its hangers fail or the fascia board behind it rots. We repair the gutter, and when the fascia is the problem we repair that too, as part of our roof repair work.

Will insurance pay for hail-damaged gutters?

Coverage depends on your policy, and your insurance company decides it. You file the claim. We document the storm damage, we are there when your adjuster inspects the roof, and if the insurance company has questions about the roof or the damage, our project manager answers them.

How often should gutters be cleaned in San Antonio?

At least once a year. Under live oaks, the cleaning that matters most comes in late spring, after they drop last year's leaves, usually by early May. Homes with pecans or cedar elms nearby, which shed in the fall, may need a second cleaning then.
